This is Fresh Digs - home of the Effingham area's locally owned retailer of new/handmade/vintage home decor, furniture and gifts. Plus we offer custom services such as furniture painting and upholstery, consultations as well as classes and events.
I'm pleased to carry name brands such as Illume soy candles, ban.do, Rifle Paper, Tag, Anne Taintor and more. We're also pleased to feature many local artisans.
To see our products head to our Facebook or Instagram feeds. On this website click the Classes or Events tab to see what's happening in the shop and around the area. Lastly, check out our blog, What's Inside, to catch a beautiful glimpse of local, Midwestern life.
If you've not been in the shop here's a quick rundown of who's behind it. I, Joanna Davies, opened Fresh Digs with a partner in 2014. Since we're a smallish town, the idea was to create a shopping experience that you'd previously have had to travel outside of Effingham to get. The goal was to offer our local community the ability to touch and see in person what they're buying PLUS have the option to spend their retail dollars in our community all while receiving personal customer service.
After becoming sole owner in 2017, I began a focused approach to finding artisans to produce specific goods. I'm talking furniture, decor items, jewelry, soap, etc. So many "made in China" wholesale goods could easily be made here by a local artist who enjoys and excels at a certain craft. This reduces waste by eliminating boxes and other packaging materials as well as reducing emissions associated with transport. Not even to mention the financial support given to a local maker all while keeping our money in our community. It's a win-win all around. I set out to match an artisan with items I wanted to offer in Fresh Digs.
I'm also happy to leave the local artisans to create their own vision. My goal is to get Fresh Digs to a point where a majority of products are either locally made, handmade or Fairtrade.
Come in sometime. The shop is separated into the main room where you'll find mostly new and locally made home decor, furniture and gift items. Through the main room you can walk into The Backroom where you'll find many different vintage eras represented in clothing, wall art, decor, jewelry, lighting and furniture. And don't forget to check out the Sale Room down the hallway on the left-hand side of the main room. It is always rotating and you can find items that are up to 75% off.
At the end of the day, volunteering with community groups is a big part of my business. I'm an active member of the marketing committee of the Downtown Effingham Business Group and I serve on the Effingham Recycles committee. That's in addition to happily making in-kind donations to select area charities and fundraisers.
Thank you and see you around.
