Nonfiction Book Club

Our quarterly nonfiction book club in partnership with Effingham Public Library will meet a tad sooner this quarter as the Library will be celebrating banned book week with a selection of book discussions around banned books.

The next nonfiction discussion will be on The Road to Little Dribbling by Bill Bryson.

"Traveling about Britain, by bus and train and rental car and on foot, following (but not too closely) a route he dubs the Bryson Line, from Bognor Regis in the south to Cape Wrath in the north, by way of places few travelers ever get to at all, Bryson rediscovers the wondrously beautiful, magnificently eccentric, endearingly singular country that is Britain."

If you've never read Bill Bryson you're in for a treat!

Grab your copy in regular, large, audio or even ebook at the Effingham Public Library.

Nonfiction Book Club

This quarter the Fresh Digs' Nonfiction Book Club is reading Pumpkin Flowers by Matti Friedman.

About the book...

It was just one small hilltop in a small, unnamed war in the late 1990s. The hill, in Lebanon, was called the Pumpkin; flowers was the military code word for "casualties." Friedman re-creates the harrowing experience of a band of young Israeli soldiers charged with holding this remote outpost, a task that would change them forever, wound the country in ways large and small, and foreshadow the unwinnable conflicts the United States would soon confront in Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere. Part memoir, part reportage, part history, Friedman’s powerful narrative captures the birth of today's chaotic Middle East and the rise of a twenty-first-century type of war in which there is never a clear victor and media images can be as important as the battle itself.

Button Bracelet Class with Crafted QC

Our friends Mary and Sarah from the Crafted QC in Davenport, IA will be in town for the Hobnob Spring Market and we thought that while Mary and Sarah are in town maybe they could offer you all a fun class!

Remember grandma's button box? It's like that, but multiplied by a thousand.

Learn a little button history and let Mary and Sarah teach you how to make your own hand-pressed, fabric covered buttons! Finish out your design with a variety of vintage buttons (including Mississippi River pearl buttons) and trinkets from our stash.

Tip: Have your own fabric, sentimental vintage fabrics or buttons? Bring 'em with! Thin fabrics work best - think quilting cotton and handkerchiefs. Buttons 1/2" in diameter are ideal.

Register here for their $30 button bracelet class where you'll make your very own button bracelet all while laughing it up with these two hilarious ladies.  The class will last two to three hours.

Plan to make it a crafty girl weekend and start it all off with this class!

Nonfiction Book Club

Join us on Monday, March 27 at 6 p.m. for our nonfiction book club.  This quarter we're reading Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates.  Grab your copy at the Effingham Public Library and plan to join us.

About the book:

For Ta-Nehisi Coates, history has always been personal. At every stage of his life, he's sought in his explorations of history answers to the mysteries that surrounded him--most urgently, why he, and other black people he knew, seemed to live in fear. Coates takes readers along on his journey through America's history of race and its contemporary resonances through a series of awakenings--moments when he discovered some new truth about our long, tangled history of race, whether through his myth-busting professors at Howard University, a trip to a Civil War battlefield with a rogue historian, a journey to Chicago's South Side to visit aging survivors of 20th century America's 'long war on black people,' or a visit with the mother of a beloved friend who was shot down by the police.

Join us Monday, December 12 from 6 to 7 p.m. as we discuss the book, A Kim Jong Il Production by Paul Fischer.

Before becoming the world's most notorious dictator, Kim Jong-Il ran North Korea's film industry. He directed every film made in the country but knew they were nothing compared to Hollywood. Then he hit on the perfect solution: order the kidnapping of South Korea's most famous actress and her ex-husband, the country's most acclaimed director.

In a jaw-dropping mission the couple were kidnapped, held hostage and then 'employed' to make films for the Dear Leader, including a remake of Godzilla. They gained Kim's trust - but could they escape?

Get a copy of the ebook at Effingham Public Library or visit the library's circulation desk for a hard copy.

Snacks and wine will be served.

Bridget Jones/Library Fundraiser

Bridget Jones/Library Fundraiser

You read that correctly.  Leave it to us to smash together Bridget Jones and the Effingham Public Library.  Let me explain.  Two years ago we held a fundraiser where we sold donated books and donated a portion of sales to the EPL's Building Campaign.  Thanks to our customers we donated almost $1000 to the awesome new library!

Fast forward to now.  Our favorite, fabulous British library employee, Catherine Bailey, came up with the brilliant idea to celebrate the upcoming Bridget Jones's Baby movie by making it the theme for this year's fundraiser.  Genius.

So that means that in addition to selling books and donating proceeds, we'll have a Bridget Jones cocktail, boozy (and not) cupcakes from our favorite Youth Services Manager, Sara Smith, plus (and this is the most exciting part) a British accent contest.  Get practicing!
